BHUBANESWAR/KEONJHAR: Odisha government has upgraded Dharanidhar Autonomous College to university in mineral rich Keonjhar district. This was notified by the higher education department on Saturday, two days before chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to Keonjhar.
After getting approval from Naveen, the department released a notification regarding this. It has altered the territorial jurisdiction of Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, Baripada, Mayurbhanj by establishing a university called Dharanidhar University at Keonjhar with effect from the date of notification in the Odisha Gazette.
In a video message released on Sunday, Naveen said, “It is a matter of happiness for Keonjhar people that Dharanidhar College has been converted into a university.” Ashish Thakre, collector of Keonjhar district, said the chief minister will declare it on Monday during his one day visit to Keonjhar.
“It is really a happy moment for us that the government has fulfilled our long-standing demand for establishment of a university in Keonjhar. Now students of our district will not go to Baripada for college-related work. We hope more postgraduate courses along with teaching facilities will be provided here for the students,” said Ajay Sahu, acting president of Keonjhar Citizen Forum.
Students also expressed their happiness over the decision. “We hope our grievances will be resolved here. Now we can get higher education in our district,” said Chitrarekha Mohanta, a student.
Another student, Gopalkrushna Pradhan, said, “We hope for better infrastructure and facilities here. Whatever problem we suffer from, we can get a solution here. We can get postgraduate courses here like we were getting from the university at Baripada.”
Dharanidhar Autonomous College was established in 1957 as Keonjhar Science College. The college was taken over by the Odisha government in 1962. In 1967, it was renamed as Keonjhar College after the introduction of humanities courses. Later in the year 1983-84, it was renamed after revolutionary Dharanidhar Naik. In 1999, the college was affiliated with North Odisha University at Baripada of Mayurbhanj district. Later it got autonomous status.
Earlier, the state government had upgraded the Vikram Deb Autonomous College, Jeypore in Koraput to Vikram Deb University.
